For more than 60 years, Shorten Reserve, Barrett Reserve and RecWest Leisure Centre have been at the heart of sport, leisure and community life in West Footscray.
Both reserves were built on former quarry and landfill sites, and over time the buildings and grounds have faced long-standing structural challenges that have limited how the spaces can be enjoyed. RecWest is also being redeveloped to make way for a new, larger and improved facility with modern features, while maintaining the community spirit that has defined it for generations.
The redevelopment is being delivered in two stages, with Stage 1 focused on preparing the precinct for its transformation. This stage involves the complete demolition of the RecWest Leisure Centre and Scout Hall buildings, along with removal of associated site elements such as fencing, goal posts, trees, lighting and paving, with existing services carefully capped. At Shorten Reserve, works include civil upgrades to the oval such as ground testing, site investigations and landfill gas monitoring, together with a minor refurbishment of the pavilion and surrounding areas.
These works are essential in setting the site up for the next stage of redevelopment, providing Council with a clear understanding of ground conditions before finalising design. Once complete, the precinct will be ready to welcome new facilities including a revitalised RecWest Leisure Centre, an expanded Shorten Reserve Oval, improved sporting and community amenities, and more open green space, ensuring it remains a place for connection, fitness and recreation for generations to come.
